lately i've been juggling with the echoes of my mexican heritage and my adaptation to the american culture. i'm tossing inspiration from both sides of the border into a blender, stirring up a heady cocktail that respects the roots while twisting things up. it's like spinning yarn out of neon signs; weaving a tapestry where the threads are made of mexican and american, ancient and modern, high and low art.
i'm here to celebrate and pay tribute to the vibrant cultural heritage of of the huichol people and to doodle with the icons of contemporary pop culture. through this, i've been peeling back layers of meaning, giving new significance to these icons, making them personal.
my stuff, it's a wild mash-up of mexican and american pop, fusing them into a sort of visual babble. i tip my hat to fellas like mel ramos, who loved the low just as i do. roy lichtenstein, who's left a hell of an imprint on me. rimbaud, with his lush imagery and deep dives into the self, and bukowski, with his no-bullsh*t, raw-as-whiskey expression, they shape the language of my work.
the frenchman, gilles deleuze, talks about assemblages and rhizomes. all about diverse things coming together, forming a sort of a complex, non-hierarchical web. that's how i see my work - a gathering of high and low art, old and new ways, mexican and american culture, huichol skills, and digital wizardry.
i'm in this game to make you(me) think, to shake up the way you(i) see things. i want you(i) to see the world through my lens, my mexican-american glasses. to feel the myriad facets of our crazy, complex world. to appreciate the arras that is our shared heritage. i seek to create works of art that are vibrant and contribute to the discourse on the interconnectedness of humanity. it's got to speak to you(me), remind you(me) of our shared human condition, and show just how interconnected we all are.
…we are, after all, artists walking the tightrope.
