the question behind this work is about learning how materials, images, and shapes can fit together. it is inspired by vladimir tatlin's 'culture of materials,' which suggests that any material, regardless of its origin, can and should be used to create art. this idea proposes that the culture of materials is the foundation for integrating art into all aspects of life. according to tatlin, the artist should wear worker’s overalls and train in the artistic fields enabled by modern technology and new construction materials.
i begin each piece by 3d-printing busts, adding metal elements that are shaped to complement the structure of the prints. once a piece is complete, i use lighting and photography (digital or film) to enhance the textures and patterns created by the materials and techniques. each bust is displayed alongside its photographic image, highlighting the interplay between the physical and the captured.
